The question of all questions!
There was a story told of two people who made a bet that they could jump into a pool from a high distance. The first person jumped and missed the pool by one foot. The second person jumped and missed the pool by five feet. What was the result? They both missed it and both died. They missed the "mark," the pool.
Now, imagine this same analogy with heaven. They both tried to be good. One missed it by just one more good thing. The other missed it by five more good things. The result is they both missed it. Is that how God intended it? We just hope to make it. We can only try, right? No, God is very organized. God plans. God documents His requirement in the Word of God, the Holy Bible. The pool truly represents "heaven through Jesus Christ."
When it comes to God's heaven, only God Himself can make the rules to enter into His Heaven. He said in Titus 3:5, "Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost." God the Father tells us that it is not by works (or deeds) or by anything WE do. It is only in what HE (Jesus) did for us that matters to God.
The only true way to be 100% sure is to follow God's Book that has instructions from God, given to man. He has placed the ONLY way to heaven in the Bible, the Word of God. John 14:6 says, "Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me."
The way to heaven is through God's way. God has a beautiful design in the book of Romans that many call the "Romans Map to Heaven."
The Roman Road provides a detailed map for our salvation and eternal life in heaven with God. Just follow these steps:
"Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me."
All are born with the sin nature. No one has to teach to do wrong because it is natural. No one can say, "Move over Jesus, I'm just as good as you." No one is perfect and no one is without sin.
The Bible says in Psalms 51:5 "Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me."
"As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one."
That one man is Adam. When he sinned in the Garden of Eden, the sin nature was passed from generation to generation. Due to the sin nature, a person is condemned to hell if he dies in this current state.
The Bible continues to speak about Adam and how sin contintue in Romans 5:13-14 "(For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law. Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similtude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come."
"Wherefore, as by one man sin entered intothe world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned."
God had a plan. He knew that man was condemned to hell and he made a way for a person to voluntarily chose heaven. He sent His only begotten Son to this world to live a perfect sinless life and to die on the cross, shed His blood for man's sin, and to rise from the grave. Christ conquered death. The Bible says in John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."
"But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us."
What is a "wage"? A wage is a payment for an act. If a person asks another person to wash their car and they will pay them, that is a wage. The "wages of sin" is the payment of sin. What is the payment of sin? Death. What is death? What kind of death? What is God speaking about here? Revelation 20:14-15 says, "And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire." So death is the lake of fire. The payment of sin is the lake of fire. God cannot lie. This is certain.
What is a "gift"? A gift is what is given free, no deed or action of works needed. If a person tells another person they have keys to a new car and that car is theirs, no strings attached. They do not have to wash it or buy it in order to receive it. Therefore, the free gift of God is eternal life in heaven THROUGH Jesus Christ.
"For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."
I John 5:11-13 says, "And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God."
God placed eternal life in Jesus Christ. Once a person puts their trust and faith in Jesus and His shed Blood on the cross, he is saved from hell and becomes a child of God, in the family of God. If a person wants to spend eternity in heaven and never see hell, that person must understand that they are a sinner, condemned to hell in their current sin condition. They must believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross, shed His Blood to wash away their sin. Lastly, they must put their faith and trust in Jesus Christ to save them from hell. He, then, becomes a born-again child of God. Christ washes away all sin: past, present, and future. That person will never see hell. That person will always have heaven as their home.
God says in Romans 10:13 that "whosoever" that is anyone. He also says "shall be saved," not might or hopefully but "shall." That is a definite!
Decision time: Pray sincerely to God and pray something like this: "Dear Jesus, I know that I am a sinner, I deserve hell. I believe Jesus died on the cross and shed His perfect Blood for me. I am now asking you to come into my heart, wash away my sin, and save my soul from hell. As You said in Your Word in Romans 10:13, "For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved." I believe that you have saved me. Thank you for saving me and thank you for giving me eternal life in heaven. In Jesus' name, Amen."
